Running – Biomechanics

Running Biomechanics involves a complex repetitive cycle of limb and trunk movements. Running adds a flight phase to the standard gait cycle, where the body is no longer in contact with the ground.


The legs effectively shorten and lengthen via ankle, knee and hip flexion / extension to allow foot ground clearance as we move forwards.


The multi joint system comprising the ankle / foot complex, knee and hip joints enables the lower limb to function as a mobile adapter, stable base, a shock absorber and provide a powerful lever to drive the running action.
